Dog Sniff Walks: Your Walk Has a Secret Enrichment Menu

Your dog's walk has a secret menu: a beagle on a leash investigating a leafy path

That patch of grass may look ordinary to you. To your dog, it can be the most interesting stop on the route. A sniff walk gives their nose time to investigate instead of treating every pause as a delay.

Three small changes for your next walk

Sniff-walk checklist: choose a quiet dog-safe route, allow sniffing pauses, and keep the leash on while watching for comfort
Choose a safe spot, allow a pause and watch your dog's response.
  1. Choose a quiet, dog-safe route. Look for secure footing and space away from busy traffic. Keep the leash on and use well-fitting walking equipment.
  2. Allow a few sniffing pauses. When the spot is safe, give your dog time to investigate. There is no target number of minutes to hit. A brief pause can be enough.
  3. Watch for comfort. Notice whether your dog is willingly exploring. Move away from hazards, unknown food, waste or anything that makes them uneasy.

Let the nose pick a stop

Sniffing helps dogs gather information. Dogs Trust recommends giving dogs opportunities to explore smells in safe places. You can add this to a familiar walk without turning it into a difficult challenge. Let your dog's interest guide a few pauses, while you keep the route and surroundings safe.

What if your dog pulls toward every smell?

Choose a calm, safe place with room to pause. Keep the leash on. If the setting is too busy or your dog seems worried, move to an easier area. A qualified trainer can help you practise comfortable walking with rewards.

Rain outside, game inside

A walk and an indoor search give your dog different experiences. For an indoor option, try the rainy-day dog activity guide or the scent-game guide. Start with easy finds and stay nearby.

Want a food-search option at home?

A PuzzlePup Snuffle Mat gives you a place for a supervised food-search game. Choose food that fits your dog, count it toward their daily allowance and put the mat away when the game is finished. See what to put in a snuffle mat and how to wash and dry it before you start.

Which stop always earns the longest investigation? Notice what your dog enjoys and use that as a clue for the next outing.
